I finished the majority of the stages on Normal difficulty and died a significant number of times.CHRONO CROSS: THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION (Square Enix, Apr 7th, $19.99) - A remaster of the acclaimed RPG CHRONO CROSS has dashed and slashed its way onto the Nintendo Switch system! A number of enhancements have been made to this RPG classic, like the ability to turn off enemy encounters and a newly refined soundtrack. For the boring statistics part of this game, I played for 1 hour and 9 minutes. I definitely recommend this for those looking for a bit of new nostalgia and anyone that’s in to action platformers. It isn’t easy, but it is satisfying and a welcome challenge. This is not one for everyone, but I had a good time playing it and plan on going back to finish the last few zones. Serena S and her robot sidekick both have a great look and the over-sexualized side of Serena does a lot to capture the time.įor $6.99, there are much worse games you could play. Each zone feels vastly different from the last and that’s due to excellent work with enemy design and environment design that all pulls together to form a great package. The aesthetics of the graphics are great and capture the retro feel well and the chiptune soundtrack is really good.

It’s satisfying and makes you feel accomplished and I enjoy that.
#Ultionus a tale of petty revenge gameplay how to
Most of my time with the game just involved me rushing to the boss, running out of lives, rinse, repeat until I learned how to fix the things I was doing wrong.

The bosses of each zone also have fantastic design and are defeated with the memorization of patterns. This is the part of the game that will make some of its potential audience hate it, but without these mechanics the game would be far too easy. This is retro design for better or for worse. They also walk at the same speed as you, so getting around a group of them can at times become completely impossible. Memorizing enemy patterns becomes a necessity as enemies can spawn in random locations and never stop. Everything from mutant frogs to a barrage of aliens to large sea creatures, quickly adapting is part of the challenge of the game.

The enemies of Ultionus vary greatly and being thrown different types of foes constantly is commonplace. The design sometimes forces you to jump and shoot diagonally downwards to kill enemies when your crouch fire doesn’t quite get them, and that is a bit of a frustration. At times, this is great as it allows you to shoot at enemies on the ceiling easily. The firing mechanics are really where the game gets tricky by letting you fire in two diagonals in front of you or straight on. The platforming mechanics feel smooth with a controller and I never once felt a death was because of unresponsive controls. You are given a blaster and a booster jump halfway through the first zone which greatly helps moving around and mobility. The dividing point of Ultionus is likely going to be the gameplay which is also straight out of an earlier era. That being said, I haven’t completed the game so I can’t speak for the ending or what the petty revenge actually ends up being, but from my understanding the game has multiple endings. Some Steam reviewers seem to think the story is a bit immature and crass, but I think it works. It’s definitely a bizarre choice for a game with a retro aesthetic to focus it’s story around something that is most prevalent in the past decade. You play as intergalactic hero Serena S who after posting about her recent accomplishments on Spacebook is quickly trolled by The Space Prince and heads out on a quest for some petty revenge. First of all, I didn’t even realize what the story was until after I played the game as it only appears to be told through a pre start screen cinematic. One of the strangest things abut Ultionus is the story behind it. If you can get over some of the dated mechanics, there is a great game here to be enjoyed. Beautiful environments on varied stages and branching paths with hidden secrets creates a great atmosphere. It’s a short experience, but one that forces you to learn from your mistakes and adapt to the challenges you’ll face. Combining the odd social networking reality we are in with the mechanics of the past, I think there is a lot to like with this game.
